![]() Good afternoon y'all!! Today, I would like to touch on the subject of training bunnies! This sounds all exciting, but be prepared for a long training time. As we know, bunnies are not as good listeners as our friends the dogs are. That being said, we have to be a little more patient when trying to train our bunnies to do tricks! Yes, bunnies can learn tricks! :) I have trained Bauer in the most necessary "trick" he knows... which is... being litter box trained! He learned this around 3 months old- after I have spent so many hours researching how to litter box train your rabbit... I will have another post just on this topic later, for everyones reference (since I struggled with this topic myself!). However, this post is focusing on extra little tricks such as coming when you call his name, standing up on two feet, and even walking on two feet, and turning around in a circle. I just started to train Bauer about 2 weeks ago, and so far he seems to be getting the hang of it. After researching what bunnies are capable of learning, I decided to start easy, with teaching him "Up". This command simply indicates to him to stand up on his two hind legs as tall as he can. I have been using a simple reward system, where I give him a treat (to be healthy, I use basil leaves or parsley- since he LOVES them!), when he performs correctly. After so much repetition he has learned the reward all too well- now he constantly stands up whenever I walk around him, because he knows he will get a treat when he does this- funny bunny! He has probably a 99% success rate on this trick. Now I am trying to teach him "Up and walk". This one is a little bit more tricky, because it requires him to walk while standing on his two feet. So far he has been able to take 2 steps before falling down. I hope through repetition I can get him used to this trick too, and I don't doubt within 2 weeks he will be able to do it as well. In order to get your bunny to understand these tricks you must practice with him every day. Approximately 15 times twice a day for a week will get your bunny pretty familiar with the new trick. It sounds like a lot, but it goes quickly, and is fun to watch him learn! Now a trick I did not teach him but noticed him doing, is the circle trick. When I put my hand on him and pull it back to his bunny butt side (hehe), he will follow my hand and make a complete circle. I am not sure if my friend who watched him for a weekend when I was gone taught him, or he picked this up on his own- but regardless, pretty cool! :) I must have a smart bunny :)!! If you have any questions about how to train your bunny, please message me!! Or, if you have any cool tricks to share with me and other readers, please comment as well! Oh, and one more thing, I did some research and found out that you can actually train your bunny to "play basketball"... bunnies will grab a litle ball, and put it inside a little hoop. I find this too funny, and am currently looking for a small enough ball for him to be able to use for this trick! As soon as I get one, he will be learning this one for sure!! :) Pictures, and videos to come whenever he masters it! Thanks for reading!
